Blogging in 2017 - Do I Suck At Blogging?

bloggers

Happy New Year guys! Here's to a happy, healthy, successful year for us all!

A new year is often a time to reflect, plan and set goals and I've been thinking about my blog lately. My little corner of the internet that has grown over the past few years; from a little hobby to a big part of my life. I often have a bit of a love/hate relationship with my blog. Not ever because I don't enjoy it because I adore it, but I often ask myself, 'am I good enough?'. The blogosphere has grown so much over the years, blogging has become a huge industry and there's a lot to live up to nowadays.

When I first started blogging, it was just a bit of fun, a bit of an online diary, somewhere to hold memories and thoughts and share them with whoever fancied reading them. A few years on, there is a HUGE amount of pressure to 'fit in' and do well. Back then, I was happy if somebody read and enjoyed my posts, but it wasn't long before I was lost in a sea of numbers; how many people have read my post? Did I get many comments? There is SO much pressure.

Earlier last year, a friend of mine contacted me asking me for advice on becoming a blogger. I told her everything I knew. Months on and she has become a really successful blogger, she's getting great traffic and her posts are being featured on respectable websites. In just a few months her blog has become more successful than mine has in almost 4 years. Do I feel resentful? Of course not! She's a lovely girl, her blog is amazing, she deserves it! She has a lot more time to spend on building up her blog and her writing is fantastic. But it makes me question myself. Do I suck at blogging?

That is one thing I lack. I'll admit it, I'm not an amazing writer. And it's reassuring to know I'm not on my own with this. The lovely Leah at Devoted To Pink has just recently posted about her dislike of writing too, a great post if you get a chance to have a nosey. It's not so much that I don't enjoy it, I do. I'm just not great at it. I write like I talk. I know some people like this as they say it makes us more real, a real person with character and personality, rather than it sounding too professional and mundane. But I do wish I was a little more articulate, as I often find I can't get my thoughts down as well as I'd like, as I just can't find the words. Does this make me a rubbish blogger?

Guess what? I don't own a marble backdrop for my photos. Nope. I know what you're thinking... Am I even a blogger? And wait for this bombshell... Letter light boxes, every blogger has one right? Not this blogger. I mean, I like them. I'd quite like one. But I feel like every blogger and it's neighbour has one. Of course I own the shitty plastic plants, fairy lights, candles, I'm in love with rose god and copper accessories as much as the next blogger and I'm known for purchasing things for the sole reason of 'ooh, that'll look nice blurred out in the background of a photo'. And I even furnished and decorated my dressing room to be worthy of blog photos.

But I don't want to feel negative about my blog, I don't want to keep thinking I'm not good enough to fit in this ever growing community. I need to remember the reason why I blog, and why I first started in the first place.

I need to look at the positives and how well my blog has grown over the past 3-4 years. I'm getting good traffic, I'm making an income, I'm being invited to events, and most importantly to me, I've made some AMAZING friends through blogging. I have THE best time with the girls I've met through the local blogging community. I class them as good friends, we all support each other and build each other up and for me, that's so important in this crazy dog-eat-dog blogosphere.

So, going forward into 2017 I'm going to set my own goals rather than trying to be as good as others. Yes I'd like my writing to be better. Yes my photos need to be a lot better. But this is my thing, I can only be better than myself.

I work from home and my work schedule is getting busier which means less time to work on my blog. But I want to make sure I get at least 1 post out a week, I also want to look into a brand new layout and look this year and just grow... at my own pace.  I'm excited to see what this year has in store!

What about you?
Have you set yourself any goals this year?

  4. My goal this year is to make sure you know how good you are at what you do Lianne, you're quick to beat yourself up but actually look at what you DO have. You always take great photos, even if you don't have the light boxes (trust me they're harder to use than you think!), you write stuff you're interested in and that reflects in your writing, whilst some others don't know what to write. Keep doing you, ignore the numbers and just enjoy writing babe! :)

  5. I've found blogging to be horribly unpredictable. I never know what is going to generate tons of traffic and what is going to be me yelling into the wind. Its never what I expect, so I try not to get too concerned with it. As long as I don't fall beneath a certain number I try not to get too down about not always reaching the highs. #tuesdaytrasures

  7. I have a love/hate relationship with blogging and also write how I talk. But I don't think I could ever give it up (Also, I just got my first ever marble backdrop - does that mean I've made it?) x

  8. I need to start taking better photos for my blog, i just can't get the background right x

  9. We all have different goals when it comes to our blogging, but I think the most important thing is that you still enjoy doing it. Everyone has things that can be improved, but as long as you love what you are doing and making small steps towards improvements, that's all that matters I think x

  10. I have set some goals just for me - it is hard not to compare yourself to other bloggers, but it can really pull you down. Well done to you :) Kaz x

  11. setting your own goals is good! it's best to be you and finding your own style rather than be the same as others

  12. I dont have a marble back drop and sometimes I can never find the words, but when they do come I jot them down or add them to a draft post I have saved and it is titled 'Warblings' and I write whatever comes into my head which later on might go on to form a post x

  13. I have set some goals this year and photography is one of them too - yours are great though dont put yourself down!

  14. It's so hard not to compare to others but I find it usually doesn't help to do it too much. I like to look at other blogs for inspiration but the moment I start to feel disheartened, I have a stern word with myself to buck up and stop being so ungrateful for my achievements so far. I think developing at ones own pace is the way to go for sure. Xxx #tuesdaytreasures

  15. Firstly you do not suck at blogging! Everyone is different and while some might be lucky and hit a great spot, others have to work harder to get there x

  16. I would of never guessed that you felt this way about your writing. Your blog is amazing girl, keep it up!

  17. I always feel like I'm crap at it but I'll be honest when I read blogs I see the same damn picture set up and I hate it, where is the individuality? One of my fav bloggers doesn't even own their Web name and often makes spelling mistakes but I feel like I'm reading a real persons words.

Do what you love doing and don't feel like your rubbish x

  18. It is a dog eat dog world out here but the end of the day it saddens me that we have become lost in the sea of numbers. For me I want good stats of course but I have stopped comparing myself to others as it is unhealthy You are not crap or sucky in fact despite what you say you are actually a really good writer. Honestly you are xx

  19. Great post hun! I was gripped this morning, but had to rush out so just commenting now! I can relate so much to what you are saying, but the difference is you are a good writer and I love your pics too!You are doing so well if you're earning an income from your blog!! Just keep doing what you're doing! I can only dream of your success - I've been blogging for years now & I'm the rubbish one haha no income, hardly any page views or visitors lol... You have a great blog here keep up the good work!

  20. I am still in my first year of blogging and I look at the number of followers others have and it's huge in comparison to me. I need to keep reminding myself that I will get there one day. Rome wasn't built in a day so to speak ha

  21. I read this and felt exactly just like you. I have been blogging two years, and so far I am happy with my stats. But I don't own the lightbox, or the marble, or the fairylights. My photos could be a lot better and I also write like I talk. However I have won a couple of awards and am up for a couple more.
Instead of asking if you are a rubbish blogger, ask if you personally love your blog and what you put out there. I know I do! xx

  22. I think we all go through stages of self doubt - I know I have over the six years I have been blogging. I don't own any marble, I don't have one of those snazzy light boxes and I keep getting too distracted with life to follow my social channels that closely.

    1. It's pretty normal to feel like that sometimes isnt it?

  23. I think everyone feels like this at some point but you really have to try and not doubt yourself - and especially not compare yourself to other people. As long as you blog because you love it, that's the main thing - success is nice but it's not everything!

  24. It's totally normal to feel like that as a blogger, anyone in any profession will compare themselves at some point. Just remember that great saying 'be yourself, everyone else is taken'. Best of luck with your goals for 2017 & thanks for linking up with '#TuesdayTreasures

  25. Do you her suck at blogging? I tend to think that some people just have elements of luck and post things at the right time. carry on - your blog is gorgeous!

  26. We all doubt ourselves at some stage. Keep it up you are doing a great job. Trust me your blog looks much better than mine x

  29. Your blog is great! I love how you're doing your own thing and not falling into the whole marble background set-up. As long as you enjoy doing it that's all that matters :) x

  33. Fab advice, we are all different so you have to do what works for you. All the best for the new year X #dreamteam

  34. I think everyone feels like this every now and again, I think its nice that you wrote a post about it. I haven't set any goals really, I just want to work on growing my blog a little bit more xx

  35. I think we had a brief chat about this last time I saw you. I'm the same as you, working my butt off when sometimes some people start and excel straight away. I don't have any marble in my home or have a lightbox either - hey we're different and I'm okay with that. If it takes longer being unique then that is far more worthy than merging into the crowd. Keep it up chick... and more social gatherings for us this year please xx

  36. I felt the same way for a few months but after I started to focus on my blog I got everything from people asking to post their content for money to free products to write about. The traffic haven't been big but it is all about the engagement. I have very engaged readers and that have made me earn money. I don't think you suck at logging, but you might be focusing too much on what you do wrong than what you do right! Wishing you best of luck x

    ReplyDelete
  37. Well I really enjoyed reading that, so I don't think you're a bad writer at all. And your photos are fab as well - I think you just need a bit more confidence in your blogging, you're a good blogger!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I think the whole point to blogging is that it is your own voice. You can write what you want, how you want it. :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Don't ever change! I personally like your writing style. It proves you're being 100% yourself. It's easy to get caught up in the craziness that has become the blogosphere with numbers etc but honestly, as long as you continue to enjoy blogging, the rest really doesn't matter! I know we've only met once, but I think you're great. Continue being you! x

  41. I don't think you suck at blogging. You're still here, and still doing it, and doing it your way! That's a big measure of how good you must be. Plus, I don't even have the plastic plants or fairy lights - I took a photo of my planner and the only thing in the background was my sofa! See, that really sucks! #TuesdayTreasures

  42. It's a hard one but if you feel like that, is there a way you can make yourself better ? Confidence boost perhaps a short online course or similar.
I lake time management currently wahh

  43. I totally get where you are coming from here - it can be easy to question yourself and judge yourself when blogging moves so fast and so many people are doing so much and its hard not to make comparisons - I have felt the same at times this year but you just have to do things your way and you are totally good enough

  44. It's great that you were able to help your friend with her blog so much! I sometimes think I "suck" at blogging too but I don't have the time to dedicate to it that some others do and sometimes you just have to accept that!
