After a yummy meal at The Handmade Burger Co, we headed over to the Showcase Cinema to see what was on.
We love the Directors Hall at this cinema; huge leather seats, loads of leg room, complimentary drinks and popcorn, and a little table - perfect room for the ice cream we can order to our seats. Showing in the Directors Hall was 'Only God Forgives'.
Me: 'I've never heard of it?!', James: 'Ryan Gosling is in it.' SOLD!
We purchased tickets and made our way to the Directors Lounge for a cheeky cocktail before being shown to our seats. Whilst we were waiting, the previous showing was finishing and people began to come out. One lady looked over at another couple waiting to see the film, shook her head and said, 'Worst film I've ever seen!!' Oh no. A group of men walked out laughing, 'What the hell was that film?!' Uh oh. Hmm, had I just spent £28 on a really BAD film?? Now, I begrudge paying normal cinema prices at the best of times, Directors Hall was always a treat, but I expect the film to be worth the money! Ah well, each to their own, maybe we'll love it.. So we tucked into our ice cream and waited for the film to start..

Rotten Tomatoes say..
'Julian (Ryan Gosling), a respected figure in the criminal underworld of Bangkok, runs a Thai boxing club and smuggling ring with his brother Billy. Billy is suddenly murdered and their crime lord matriarch, Crystal (Kristin Scott Thomas) arrives from London to bring back the body. When she forces Julian to settle the score with his brothers killers, Julian finds himself in the ultimate showdown.'
TheBrunetteSays..
Well.. for me, this film was unbelievably dull. Awful, really awful. 'Only God Forgives' is a crime-thriller shot in Bangkok, Thailand. To be honest, I was truly confused throughout a lot of it. The majority of the film is shot over dramatic music, with the odd conversation thrown in. To the arty film fan, it was probably amazing. But for me, no. Just no. It was violent, psychotic and even pornographic in some parts. The was no 'Ooh what's going to happen next??' for me, just 'Is it finished yet?' With the rape and murder of a 16 year old girl, whorehouses, huge uncomfortable sexual tension between a mother and son, limbs being chopped off like vegetables and a man being tortured with needles - it wasn't really my kind of film. Yes, Ryan Gosling looked as hot as always. But no, The Notebook this was not.
Would I recommend it?
Hmm, no. By all means go make your own minds up, see what you think. I think it's a film that'll either be really loved, or totally hated. But no, I wouldn't bother. And I certainly wouldn't recommend you pay to watch it in the Directors Hall!
Would I watch it again?
Noooo. I certainly won't be watching it again.
'The God Forgives' is currently being shown at cinemas nationwide.
Have you seen 'The God Forgives'?? What did you think??

Ohhhh! That's a shame! I was actually looking forward to this film! I thought it would be fantastic! Considering Ryan Goslings in it.

ReplyDeleteLovely to hear from you over on my blog (Seek My Scribbles). I have followed you back on BlogLovin and I'm looking forward to meeting you in November at the meet up!
It's such a shame that you were disappointed by the film, especially after forking out so much money. I absolutely love Gosling (like the rest of the female population), but this doesn't seem like a film that would appeal to me eithr! xo
